New UWI chancellor to be installed Saturday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The installation ceremony for the new University of the West Indies (UWI) Chancellor, Robert Bermudez, is scheduled for Saturday at the St Augustine Campus.
The ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm (Jamaica time)/ 6:00 pm (Eastern Caribbean time) and incorporates centuries-old elements such as academic regalia, an academic procession and the mace, which are based on the tradition of the medieval university.
Bermudez, a Trinidad and Tobago national, is the 6th Chancellor of the University and was appointed at the University Council’s annual business meeting held on April 27, succeeding George Alleyne.
The Chancellor is the highest office-holder in the UWI system, exercising powers and responsibilities laid down in the UWI Charter, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations.
