3. 100 prisoners escape on hurricane-hit British Virgin Island
Over 100 high-risk prisoners escaped in the British Virgin Islands during Hurricane Irma, a British junior minister said on Tuesday, as he raised the death toll in British territories to nine.
4. Westmoreland man killed at home
The body of a man was found in a pool of blood at his home in Dundee district in Westmoreland yesterday. Dead is 39-year-old Kenrick Salmon, otherwise called “Junior”.
5. Jamaica to host sports conference on intellectual property — Grange
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange says that her ministry will this year host a “major conference on the strategic use of intellectual property in sport” in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO).
6. Govt should bring home Irma-affected J’cans in Eastern Caribbean, says PNP
The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is calling on the Government to assist Jamaicans to return home from Irma-ravished islands in the Eastern Caribbean and the Turk and Caicos Islands.
7. ‘Play-play guns’ seized in Mt Salem ZOSO — Bunting
Spokesperson on National Security Peter Bunting says that homemade guns found last week in the special zone of operations (ZOSO) in Mount Salem, St James are “play-play” guns, as they were merely pieces of board wrapped in tape.
8. Kingston man arrested at NMIA on lottery scamming charges
A Kingston man, who the police say was found in possession of identity information of overseas residents, was yesterday arrested shortly after arriving at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston on a flight from Panama.
9. Gov’t activates Irma relief fund for hurricane-affected C’bean countries
Minister of Local Government, Desmond Mckenzie, this afternoon announced that the Government has activated its Sub-regional Coordination Centre and will be sending a specialist team to the Turks and Caicos and The Bahamas to help evaluate and assess damage caused by Hurricane Irma.
10. 160 greenhouses set up on reclaimed bauxite lands
Some 160 greenhouses have been established on mined-out bauxite lands in St Ann, Manchester, Clarendon, and St Elizabeth at a cost of approximately $240 million.
