Youngsters impress at boxing summer camp
The seventh staging of the annual Kingsley Goodison Summer Boxing Camp for campers between the ages of 10 and 17 ended on Friday with success across the board.
The camp ended with an 8-bout card fashioned between the campers, and this generated great excitement with parents and spectators alike. This year, an average of 35 campers attended with not less than 30 attending on any one day from participating gyms Dream Sports, G C Foster, Oracabessa Boxing Club, Seaview Boxing Gym, Stanley Couch Gym, Sugar Knockout Gym and St Thomas Gym.
The offering between Tyreek Jackson, aged 12 of Oracabessa Boxing Club and Rashaun Frankson, 11 of the Stanley Couch Gym stood out for commendation above other proceedings of the evening.
Both youngsters were commended for their performance. They also received high praises for the hard work they put in during the camp’s beginners’ callisthenics workout.
Goodison, who was on hand to witness the exhibitions, said: “These two youngsters have displayed a level of talent and boxing acumen that belies their ages. And I would say without doubt that with continued support for their well-being and a wholesome interest maintained in the craft by these two prospects, they will certainly figure prominently in the craft to uphold the future of Jamaica amateur boxing.”
All campers who attended for three days or more received Certificates of Participation. Special prizes were also awarded to the Most Outstanding Camper male, which went to Tyreek Jackson from the Oracabessa Boxing Club, while Britney McFarlane, aged 16 of Dream Sports Gym, copped the female section.
