A culture of proper waste disposal
Among the observations that first-time Jamaican visitors to Canada usually make is how well kept the public spaces are.
It borders on cliche for the number of times it’s been repeated, but there is no denying the bare truth of the observation. From the minute you step off the aircraft and enter the airport, the culture of proper garbage disposal greets you. In some places, it’s called ‘resource recovery’, but coded bins for different types of garbage — plastics, glass, paper, batteries, organic trash — are everywhere. The same is true for schools, churches, supermarkets, hotels, even the side of the street.
Here are some examples from the Ontario cities of Oshawa and Peterborough, as well as St John, New Brunswick.
