Coach Gilbert salute Girlz for dominant display in SVG
VILLA BEACH, St Vincent and the Grenadines — After accomplishing their aim of winning both games of the CONCACAF Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Qualifiers, a very happy Jamaica Under-17 women football team delegation arrives in the island today.
The delegation was due to depart St Vincent and the Grenadines in four groups yesterday, and all members were expected arrive in Jamaica at 5:00 am today.
Head coach Xavier Gilbert said that he was pleased with the performances from his team in winning both matches to prove their superiority over other Caribbean rivals.
“The performances were great from the girls… they did well and I am proud of them. I am pretty much pleased winning both games and not conceding any goals at all, as that is always important and critical in matches.
“It also was a very good opportunity for the young ladies. I mean we took 20 girls here to St Vincent and the Grenadines for the tournament and we manage to play 19 of them in terms of getting 20 and more minutes on the field, and that is good. “This speaks volumes of the team for the strength and the depth of the squad that we have. These girls are talented and again I am proud of them,” Gilbert told the Jamaica Observer.
The Young Reggae Girlz whipped St Kitts and Nevis 10-0 in their opening encounter on Friday before they brushed aside hosts St Vincent and the Grenadines 7-0 on Sunday to top Group E. Both matches were played at the Arnos Vale sports complex in Kingstown.
Jamaica finished on maximum six points, St Kitts and Nevis, who had defeated the host nation 3-1 last Wednesday to kick – start the qualifiers, finished in second spot on three points. The hosts were last in their three-team group without a point.
Jamaica, along with the other four group winners, advanced to the final stage of qualification and will join Haiti as the host of the final round to be held October 16-22.
“It is a very happy feeling knowing we have topped the group and have advanced to the final round of the CFU Qualifiers. It is just around the corner in October and so we have go back and start preparation again.
“We are going to give them (Reggae Girlz) a week off and start the preparation going to Haiti in October, at which time I believe they will do well again. They need to rest, they need to recover, and they need to treat some injuries,” Gilbert said.
Nevillegail Able, who was only featured in the second and final game of the qualifiers, also had something to cheer about.
The central midfielder made three assists, plus she rattled the St Vincent and the Grenadines crossbar twice from long ranges with her powerful left foot.
“Coming home with two wins from two games is very wonderful. The feeling is really great and the team is very happy. We now turn our attention to Haiti for the second part in the qualification period, and I am very confident that the team will do well.
“I believe, in both games, the team played very well. All the players chipped in and did their part and I congrats them for that. It was a team effort and I enjoyed myself. I did want to score a goal but it went close,” Able said.
