Fire-hot sets in St Mary’s rain
DUE to Saturday’s inclement weather, only a handful of patrons turned out for the staging of charity show St Mary Mi Come From. It was hard to get settled inside the Gray’s Inn Sports Complex venue, as the ankle-high grass and soggy ground proved to be quite a bother for those who braved the rain.
It was the show’s 13th staging and, over the years, proceeds have been donated to financially challenged institutions in St Mary, St Ann, and Kingston.
The performances of Khaliah Rose, Andrew Tosh, Lymie Murray, Fantan Mojah, Jah Mason, Ras I, Anthony Cruz, Ernie Smith and Pluto Shervington brought cheers from those in front of the stage.
Exceptional sets, however, came from Bushman and eight-time Grammy winner Stephen Marley.
St Thomas native, Bushman, performed as if he was delivering to a full house.
During his well rehearsed set, he churned out the lyrics to hits including Remember the Days, Lighthouse, Worries and Problems, Call The Hearse and Downtown.
As expected headliner, Stephen Marley, brought the house down throughout his performances. He did songs like Options, Cigarette Smoke, Anointed, Brotherly Love, Tight Ship, Top Rankin and So Strong.
Marley’s set grew more exciting when he was joined by the show’s host Capleton to perform their Rockstone collaboration.
“Da one name rain or shine,” Capleton said, as he ‘dashed a fire in the rain’ much to the approval of the small audience.
He later shared stage with reggae singer Jah Cure, whose performance was also well received.
It was close to 4:00 am when the Jamaica Observer team made their exit from the stage show, which was still in full swing.
For future stagings, organisers should put in place the necessary measures in the event of rain. A few patrons were seen seeking refuge from the showers under the stage and under parked trucks inside the venue.
