St leger fact and figures
The win by She’s A Maneater in the Jamaica St Leger on Saturday was the fourth for trainer Wayne DaCosta. DaCosta first won this Classic race in 1996 with another Triple Crown winner, War Zone . His second St Leger victory came in 1999 with the filly Good Prospect . Then in 2013, it was the turn of Perfect Neighbour to provide the champion trainer with another hold on the Jamaica St Leger.
Jockey Omar Walker, who piloted She’s A Maneater, is now just one race shy of completing victories in all five of the Classic races made up of the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, the Jamaica Oaks, the Jamaica Derby, and the Jamaica St Legr. Walker has two wins in the Derby; Seeking My Dream in 2015 and now She’s A Maneater. The reigning champion jockey won the 1000 Guineas with Puddy Pooh for trainer Richard Azan in 2015. In the 2000 Guineas, Walker guided Talented Tony K to victory for trainer Lorne Kirlew in 2014. The one remaining Classic left for Walker to win to complete the series is the Jamaica Oaks.
The history of the St Leger at Caymanas Park indicates that its distance was changed twice. First, between 1957 up to 1966, the race was run over 14 furlongs (2,800m) before being changed to 10 furlongs (2,000m) in 1967 up to 1970, after which it was again contested over 14 furlongs. The promoters then made the change again from 14 ‘furlong’ to 10 furlongs in 1991.
The last horse to win the St Leger over 14 furlongs was Khadullah in 1990. Khadullah was ridden by Hubert Bartley for trainer Kenneth Mattis.
