Sir Budget steals spotlight in midweek romp
Although there were two trophy races on the card, it was Sir Budget — bred, owned and trained by Michael Beecham — who took the spotlight by scoring a fighting win in the top-rated Open Allowance event over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Ridden by apprentice Anthony Thomas, Sir Budget ( Burning Margue–Victeerbel) got a good break from the number seven post, led passing the dummy rails and then had to fight off the challenge from Choo Choo Blue (Javaniel Patterson) inside the last half-furlong (100m) to get home by a neck.
Polly B (Hakeem Pottinger), who was up with pace, did well to finish in third spot with Crucial Appeal, under Shane Ellis, completing the frame. The final time done by Sir Budget was a decent 58.4 seconds with recorded splits of 22.2 and 44.4 seconds.
“This horse is really a good horse and he continues to show that each time. He loves the five straight and he ran very well to win the race and I am happy with the win,” Beecham told the Jamaica Observer.
The feature event, the Master Blaster Trophy, a restricted Allowance event for native-bred four-year-olds and upward non-winners of three other than, was won in fine style by the return to form Siempre Bueno.
The chestnut horse won the five-furlong (1,000m) straight event by over a length in 59.3 seconds. Siempre Bueno was the second winner on the day for trainer Anthony Nunes and jockey Wesley Henry.
Nunes earlier saddled Musketoon ( Amoy Gray) in the fourth race, while Henry rode Storming to victory in the third race for trainer Michael McIntosh.
Sweet Destiny, under Odeen Edwards, made one move to win the Henry George Harrison Snr Memorial Cup co-feature over six and a half furlongs (1,300m) to give trainer Steven Todd his second winner on the day also. Todds other winner was Royal Girl (Natalie Berger) in the second race.
Racing continues on Saturday.
