Bird captures two titles
JAMAICA’S Selena Bird defeated compatriot Moesha Fox 6-1, 6-1 to capture the Girls’ Under-14 singles title at the Jamaica COTECC Tennis Circuit, at the National Commercial Bank (NCB) tennis courts last Wednesday.
Prior to reaching the final, unseeded 11-year-old Bird, in one semi-final, knocked out second-seeded 12-year-old Abigail Perue in straight sets, while the unseeded 14-year-old Fox surprised top seed 12-year-old Katherine Dibbs, also in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
She went on to team with Dibbs, whom she had defeated in the singles finals, to win the Girls’ 14 doubles, beating the second-seeded Jamaican pair of Fox and Perue in the final 6-3, 7-5.
Bird and Dibbs defeated Isabella Alvarez-Fu of Honduras 6-4, 6-4, while Fox and Perue stopped Soleny Gonzalez of Guyana and Emma Weech of The Bahamas 6-4, 6-4 in their respective semi-finals.
In the Boys’ Under-14 final, top seed 14-year-old Gianlcua Beaujon of Curacao defeated unseeded 13-year-old Yannick Issa of Suriname in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to win the title.
Beaujon and beaten Valentine Vasquez of Honduras 6-0, 6-4, while Issa knocked out second seed Michael Major Jr of The Bahamas in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in their respective semi-finals.
The Boys 14 doubles was won by the second-seeded pair of Beaujon of Curacao and Vasquez of Honduras, who defeated the top pair of Issa of Suriname and Major of The Bahamas in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Beaujon and Vasquez had beaten the Jamaican pair of Keyon’dre Clarke and Cole McNair in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, while Issa and Major knocked out the pair of Jake Booker of Canada and Jack Lomax of England in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The Consolation Boys’ 14 singles final was won by Jamaica’s Joshua Graveney, who defeated Jairdan Gibbs of Jamaica 1-4, 4-2, 10-7 in the super tiebreaker set.
Graveney had beaten top seed Lomax of England 4-2, 5-3, while Gibbs had defeated Booker of the Cayman Islands 4-2, 5-4 (3-0 in the tie-breaker set) in their respective semi-finals.
The Girls’ 14 Consolation singles final was won by Emma Weech of The Bahamas, who defeated Natalia Molanphy Figueroa of Honduras 4-1, 4-0.
