Four Jamaicans in Blue Mountain Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships semis
FOUR Jamaicans will contest the girls’ 18 and under singles semi-finals of the 2017 Touch Tuina Blue Mountain Junior Tennis Championships today at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
The four Jamaicans are second-seeded Michaela Stephens, third-seeded Jenna Harrison, fourth-seeded Hayley McNair and unseeded Aanchal Khemlani, who advanced from wins in their respective quarter-finals yesterday.
Action in the semi-finals of the boys and girls 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under, and boys 12 and under will be played this morning from 9 o’clock.
The girls 18 and under semis will see Stephens going up against last year’s runner-up McNair, while Harrison faces Khemlani in the other semi-final.
In their respective quarter-finals, Stephens defeated unseeded Kobi Wilcott of Jamaica 6-1, 6-1; McNair won a tough match against her compatriot Moesha Fox, coming from a set down to win 6-7 (5-7 tie-breaker), 6-4, 10-2 in the super tie-breaker set; Harrison knocked out Kailey Chin of Jamaica in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, while Khemlani gained a walk over from top seed Illana Blackwood of Barbados.
Meanwhile, two Jamaicans, second-seeded Cliff Dwyer and Myles Harrison, will face each other in the boys 18 and under semi-finals today, while top seed Callum Theaker takes on unseeded Zachary Phillips of St Vincent and the Grenadines in the other semi-final.
In their quarter-finals yesterday, Dwyer defeated Alex Rose of Jamaica 6-4, 6-1, while Harrison stopped fourth-seeded Romeo Edwards of Jamaica 6-2, 6-3. Theaker easily defeated Jamaica’s Mario Campbell 6-1, 6-3, while Phillips knocked away third seed Damani Cain of Jamaica 6-2, 6-2.
The boys 16 and under semi-finals will have second-seeded Cain facing Campbell of Jamaica, while Carlos Wilson of Jamaica takes on Harrison Clough of St Vincent and the Grenadines in the other semi-final.
Cain had defeated Keyondre Clarke of Jamaica in his quarter-final match 6-2, 6-2; Campbell came from a set down to eliminate Romeo Edwards of Jamaica 6-7 (14-16 tie-breaker), 6-3 before his opponent retired; Wilson received a walk over from Danzell Knight of Jamaica; Clough also received a walk over from Ryan Cox of Jamaica in quarter-finals.
The girls 16 and under singles semi-final will be an All-Jamaica battle with last year’s winner and defending champion Stephens facing Jamaica’s Abigail Peru, while last year’s runner-up and fourth-seeded Jenna Harrison taking on second seed Hayley McNair.
In their quarter-finals yesterday, Stephens defeated Fox of Jamaica 6-4, 6-1; Peru beat Kailey Chin of Jamaica 6-4, 6-1; McNair beat Wilcott of Jamaica 7-5, 6-4; Harrison beat Valaine Clarke of the United States 6-1, 6-2.
The boys 14 and under semis will be between Alex Claybourn of the Cayman Islands and Jake Booker also of the Cayman Islands, while the other semi-final is between Jamaica’s Keyondre Clarke and Harrison Clough of the Cayman Islands.
Meanwhile, in the girls 14 and under singles, Jamaica’s Peta-Gaye Graham will face Re-Ann Barclay of Jamaica, while Jamaica’s Alyssa James will face the winner of the quarter-finals between two Jamaicans, Peru and Thande Sampson, in the semi-finals.
