PNP demands removal of JLP councillor from St Thomas Parish Council
ST THOMAS, Jamaica – The People’s National Party (PNP) Municipal Caucus in St Thomas is calling on Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie to instruct Councillor Dean Jones to recuse himself with immediate effect “as he is unqualified to continue performing such duties as a duly elected councillor”.
The PNP Caucus, in a statement today, said that Jones is in breach of the Local Government Act 2016, which states that a person is disqualified from sitting or voting in a Municipal Council, if at the time of the election they were employed as a civil servant.
The Opposition members of the St Thomas Municipal Council stated that they obtained the P45 Form which confirms that Jones was employed as a civil servant up to the 15th of December 2016, which puts him in violation of the Local Government Act when he was elected.
The PNP Caucus said that Jones, at the time of local government elections, was not eligible for nomination and election to the parish council division, and must be removed immediately.
Jones was elected as a councillor for the Yallahs Division in the St Thomas Municipal Council.
