KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — The St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre has benefitted from the donation of a hydroponic farming facility from the College of Agriculture, Science and Education, which will aid in the rehabilitation of inmates.

Hydroponic is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water, without soil. The farming system was officially handed over by State Minister in the Ministry of National Security, Pearnel Charles Jr at an opening ceremony held recently at the Correctional Facility.

In his address, Charles Jr noted that the initiative is an essential tool in the rehabilitation of the inmates.

He also highlighted that the programme will contribute towards ensuring food security within the country.

“The collaboration between our correctional officers and the 19 inmates who are participants in this project, will serve to increase our capacity, while providing training and skills that will be useful to have when they are released,” he said.

Charles argued it was important that initiatives like this continue, as the country seeks to work towards reducing recidivism.

“Rehabilitation for purposeful reintegration will only occur through a continuation of these efforts.” the state minister added.

For her part, Commissioner of Corrections at the Department of Correctional Service, Ina Hunter shared her appreciation of the investment in the inmates.

She also noted that the project will transform inmates into productive and self-sufficient citizens.

The hydroponic farm was dedicated to deceased Correctional Officer, Kalwayne Gordon.
