Jamaica beat Bermuda 3-0 in Davis Cup team tennis
JAMAICA defeated Bermuda 3-0 as the 2017 Davis Cup/BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group Three Team Tennis Championships got underway in Montevideo, Uruguay, yesterday.
The victory for Jamaica was started by Jacob Bicknell, who defeated his opponent in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, while Rowland “Randy” Phillips put them 2-0 up in the other singles when he brushed aside David Thomas in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
Jamaica clinched the tie when both Phillips and Bicknell paired in the doubles to beat the Bermudan pair of Hogan Whitter and Jenson Bascom in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to register a 3-0 win.
The Jamaicans will play Puerto Rio today, before the rest day tomorrow, then they play Honduras, Antigua and Barbuda and Puerto Rico.
The Jamaicans are competing in Pool ‘A’ which has Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Antigua and Barbuda, while Pool ‘B’ comprises Uruguay, Costa Rica, Cuba and Panama.
The winner of Pool ‘A’ will play off with the runner-up of Pool ‘B’, while the winner of Pool ‘B’ plays off with the runner-up of Pool ‘A’ to decide the top two teams who will be promoted to Group Two of the Americas Zone for next year’s competition.
