NSWMA executive director to tour Riverton today after 5 dump fires in 2 months
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Audley Gordon, is set to tour the Riverton City landfill this afternoon following a fire at disposal site yesterday.
NSWMA said this brings to five, the number of disposal sites, set ablaze in the past two months.
In a release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), NSWMA said it has launched an investigation as the situation “clearly suggests arson”.
Gordon was quoted as saying: “We are extremely concerned that unscrupulous persons, whether coordinated on their own, could be sabotaging our efforts at the NSWMA. These fires are very costly on the taxpayers plus they compromise air quality and thereby threaten the health of our people.”
She also urged people to desist from the practice and instead partner with the authority as it seeks to transform itself.
The five affected landfills are Retirement in St James; Myersville, St Elizabeth; Hadden in Moneague, St Ann; Doctors Wood in Buff Bay, Portland; and Riverton, St Andrew.
Meanwhile, the OPM release reported that a meeting has been scheduled with the Police High Command to address the issue.
