Silence of Gov’t on recent murders sparks anger
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Readers are currently at loggerheads over whether or not the Andrew Holness led Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration is doing enough to curb the spiralling instances of crime and violence plaguing the country.
The discussion among Jamaicans came to a hilt yesterday after police revealed that it would today demolish a tomb constructed inside a house in West End, Negril, Westmoreland, where the remains of a missing mother and her daughter, who are feared murdered, are believed to be buried. The police said it received a report Monday evening that 24-year-old Shantal Dyer and her daughter, three-year-old Orlandie Miller have not been seen since late April.“The silence of our leaders is deafening”, said one social media user.“So u mean fi tell me say 136 Jamaicans were murdered last month. Two pregnant teen killed and nobody nah say nothing? Weh the children’s advocate dem deh? Weh the always vocal PM deh? When Lisa and Portia inna power all a this a did fi them fault. Now a who fa fault?” she questioned. “When I came home and turn on my TV and this news greeted me I cried out for Jesus! When I saw the beautiful baby and young lady this is too much God, where are you for these monsters?” another questioned.Meanwhile, others were adamant that the prime minister shouldn’t be blamed as the issue is one that needs the collective unity of all Jamaicans.“Stop saying Andrew this and Andrew dat, one man can’t stop this it’s gonna take all of us… mothers and girlfriends know what dem son/man doing and continue to condone and protect dem. We need to break this silence, until it reaches our door step we won’t react smh,” one user reasoned.“Come on peoples, uno seh Andrew this and that….weh Andrew fi do have camera and every citizen who a commit crime…..very very impossible…….yes trying to bring down the crime rate but he cannot stop crime…. As a wanted dead another rise….. Unu a gwaan like seh a Andrew a send them out fi kill…..a wi Jamaicans a sit in silence and mek gunmen a rupture our place of happiness,” another added.Others however found grouse with the fact that Holness and other government officials are quick to send sympathy and condolences when crime and violence take place in other countries but fail to do the same when it is happening in Jamaica.“The prime minister is the leader of the government and when things go wrong in England the prime minister is communicating sorrow in the name of Jamaica yet women and children are being killed in Jamaica and the prime minister is silent. Why were you elected if your government will not protect the people”, said one user.“The PM must put a security personnel at everybody door? He and the police knows when some of you all sons, uncles, brothers and cousins, sit down and say they are gonna kill this and kill that and you all do nth.It start wid oonu report the careless talks bout kill dis and dat and stop say you neva know dem serious…kmdt..oonu same one send dem go hide,” said another angrily.
