Rose, Cox, Bird top Gas Pro Junior Tennis Champs
MILTON Rose, Ryan Cox and Selena Bird were among the champions in the 2017 Gas Pro Open Junior Tennis Championships which ended at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Saturday.
The championships, which was scheduled for May 13-14, had to be rescheduled to Saturday due to rain.Milton Rose received a walk-over as Alex Rose had defaulted in the boys’ 18 and under final. In their semi-finals, Milton Road beat Romeo Edwards 8-4, while Alex Rose won 8-2 over Blake Shoucair.Meanwhile, Ryan Cox was the winner of the boys’ 16 and under final by defeating Damani Cain in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. In the semi-finals, Cox had beaten Carlos Wilson 8-6, while Cain blanked Joshua Garvey 8-0.The girls’ 16 and under final was won by Selena Bird, who easily defeated Kailey Chin in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. In their semi-finals, Bird came from a set down to beat Hayley McNair 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 (super tie-breaker set), while Chin also came from a set down to beat Moesha Fox 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 (super tie-breaker set).Keyondre Clarke captured the boys’ 14 and under singles title when he defeated Daniel Azar in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. In their semi-finals, Clarke had beaten Blake Shoucair 8-2, while Azar eliminated Cole McNair 8-2.Alyssa James easily defeated Re-Anna Barclay 6-1, 6-1 to win the girls’ 14 and under singles title. James had defeated Cai Drummond 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 (super tie-breaker set), while Barclay knocked out Gabriella Steele 6-1, 6-4 in semi-final action.Matthew James won the boys’ 12 and under singles title with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Arjan Trehan. James crushed Danill Moe 8-0, Trehan beat Joshua Haye 8-2 in their respective semi-final matches.The consolation boys’ 12 and under singles final was won by Khaj Clarke who beat Joakim Hagen-Larsen 8-6.— Gerald Reid
