High powered rifles discovered in T&T shipment of dog food
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Security officials in Trinidad are investigating the discovery of three high powered assault rifles discovered in a container of loose dog food, imported from Canada.
The police report that the AK47s were found at Piarco Air Services, but this was after customs officers realised that approximately eight weapons, along with assorted ammunition and magazines, were cleared undetected just a few minutes before they made the second discovery and seizure of the AK47s.The Trinidad Guardian reports that the two barrels of dog food originating from Canada were consigned to two different people through the same shipping company. The two consignees came around the same time to clear the barrels. The first consignee managed to get the barrel cleared and left, but when the second consignee came and checks were made the AK47s were found as the loose dog food shifted, causing the weapons to be exposed. It’s reported that up to late Wednesday, the second consignee was assisting a team of officers from the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit and Customs and Excise Division in their investigations. The Guardian quoted a Canadian source as saying that semi-automatic firearms such as AK47s are illegal in Canada and it is believed that the weapons were shipped to Canada from the US.
