Grange pays tribute to Maroon Colonel CLG Harris
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, yesterday paid tribute in the House of Representatives to former colonel of the Moore Town maroons, CLG Harris, who died last week Tuesday.
A graduate of Mico College, Colonel Harris was the leader of the Moore Town Maroons for more than three decades, from1964 to1995, when Colonel Wallace Sterling succeeded him.He also served in the Senate between 1966 and 1972, appointed on the advice of then acting prime minister, Sir Donald Sangster.Founded in 1734, Moore Town is now the primary home of the Windward Maroons, whose most famous leader was the national hero Nanny. Harris is credited with leading the chorus for Nanny to become Jamaica’s only national heroine during his period in the Senate.In her brief tribute yesterday, Grange noted that Harris also served as principal of the Maroon Town Primary School from 1954 to 1976, and wrote several books including “The Chieftainess”.Harris died at the age of 100.Balford Henry
