August Town man convicted of murdering ‘father figure’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — More than nine years after the shooting death of a man at his home on Marley Avenue in August Town, St Andrew, a jury has found his accused killer guilty of murder.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) in a release today said the accused, Jason Brown, murdered Denver Hibbert at his home on March 14, 2008.According to the ODDP, the Crown led evidence that about 1:40 pm that day, Hibbert, his wife and three children were at their home having lunch, when a male voice called out to Hibbert who then went into the yard and greeted two men – one of whom was the accused.Brown, otherwise called ‘Tow Tow’, asked Hibbert for $1,000 and Hibbert responded “Me no deh pan nothing right now”.The other man spun around, took out a handgun and fired at Hibbert.Brown then took the gun from the other man and fired five shots at the deceased; both men then fled the yard, the ODPP detailed.Hibbert succumbed to the gunshot wounds and the accused was eventually apprehended on March 31, 2009 by the police.The murder trial commenced on May 1 before Justice Courtney Daye.The main eyewitness was the wife of the deceased who was inside the house and saw the accused, who she also knew as ‘Tow Tow’. The court was told that the accused would regularly visit the deceased man’s yard as he and the deceased had a father/son relationship.Yesterday, the jury returned a guilty verdict.
