Top cop signs one-off withdrawal of disorderly conduct charges
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Police Commissioner, George Quallo says he has signed an order for the withdrawal of all orderly room conduct charges against members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force older than a year.
“So, yesterday I signed a nice little thing and sent it out to all divisional commanders and formations to say, all orderly room matters in excess of a year, must be withdrawn,” disclosed Quallo.He made the disclosure on Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the Jamaica Police Federation 74th Annual Joint Central Conferences.The recently appointed police commissioner pointed out that the issue of orderly room charges are having a negative impact on promotions and participation in courses by the police officers impacted.Quallo further made it clear that this does not mean that all orderly room charges that goes beyond a year will be removed, as this move is a one-off gesture. He said, moving forward, persons who incurred such a disciplinary order will have sixty days to complete those.”But hear the catch to it now, because we are running a discipline organisation. As of now the charge to every divisional commanders, that where an infraction commit, you have sixty days in which to complete all of those,” added the commissioner.Meanwhile, Quallo called on members of the force to refrain from fabricating stories against each other as it approaches promotion time.”Every now and then it comes around to promotion time. Wow, and we start to tell lie pon Tom, we start tell lie on Jane,” he said, to another round of applause.The strident Commissioner continued, “we need to stop that. If somebody is doing something that is wrong, then we need to say it. We don’t have to fabricate anything. We don’t need to do that. We need to be honest with each other.”The two-day conference, which ends today, was held at the Iberostar Hotel and Resort in St James under the theme: “Preserving the Institution; Serving the Protectors.”Anthony Lewis
