TA endorses move to import 8-y-o vehicles for taxis
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Transport Authority is endorsing the decision of the Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Karl Samuda to act on the recommendation of his colleague, Transport Minister Mike Henry to allow the importation of eight-year-old vehicles for use as taxis.
In a release this afternoon, the authority said the move should serve to reduce the cost of improving the current fleet of taxis in the public land transportation sector and ease the financial burden on the public transport operators. These operators, the release explained, are frequently challenged to source funding to upgrade their aging vehicles.Additionally, the change in policy will create the opportunity, to improve the age of vehicles in the fleet, as well as the quality, comfort, safety and security of the commuting public. Over the past year, Henry has led the charge for a review of the vehicles used in the public transportation sector.
