Impasse between trade unions, China Harbour
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) says it will be approaching the Government to assist in resolving what they are calling an ‘impasse’ between unions and China Harbour Engineering Company.
A release from UCASE today said the issue emanated from a meeting between China Harbour, UCASE, as well as the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) and the National Workers Union (NWU), which ended abruptly when, “due to questionable remarks made by the Chinese Embassy representative,” union officers walked out of the meeting.
The release did not disclose any further information about the alleged remarks.
UCASE said workers had raised concerns about the insufficiency of payment arrangements and medical attention offered to workers on projects by Chinese companies.
