Fitz Jackson to organise lawsuit against banks
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Member of Parliament for South St Catherine, Fitz Jackson, says he will be organising a ‘class action’ lawsuit against banks for what he called illegal dormancy fees asked of customers.
Jackson said he would contact lawyers to seek to regain all fees paid under dormancy fees utilised by banks. He claimed that such fees were contrary to the Banking Services Act. Speaking in the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Opposition member said he was confident of finding Jamaicans to be part of the suit.
The MP said several banks had withdrawn the fees after he first raised issue with them, but “that is not enough” where there had been a breach of the law.
Meanwhile, Jackson withdrew a Bill, which proposed to amend the Banking Services Act, for it to be re-tabled with changes. A fiery Jackson chided Parliamentarians for what he said was ‘yapping’ about banking fees affecting Jamaicans, without taking any action against this.
He, however, sought to make clear that the withdrawal was not a determination of Parliamentary action to regulate banking fees. He said that he would reintroduce the Bill in two weeks.
