Demish Gaye comes of age at All-Comers Development Meet
Having promised much since last year, Demish Gaye announced himself in no uncertain manner, running a personal best of 44.85 seconds in the Men’s 400m at the JAAA All-Comers Development Meet at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Gaye, 24, who took up track and field four years ago, got the better of national champion Javon Francis of Akan who was second in 46.52. Delano Williams of Great Britain was second overall, having won his heats in 46.23.Gaye ran with bib number 44, probably an indication that he wanted to run sub-45 for the first time. He took control very early after 200 metres and it was clear he would have won after Francis made his move at the 300m mark, but Gaye was long gone.Gaye lowered his previous best of 45.24, achieved on April 8, 2017, after clocking 20.48 over 200m in March 2017.Former Calabar High school star Michael O’Hara, now at Racers Track Club, was 17th overall with a time of 48.46. National representative Javere Bell was seventh overall in 47.12.The 2014 Commonwealth Games 200m champion, Rasheed Dwyer, showed that he is in good nick, capturing the men’s 200m in a swift 20.27 seconds (2.1 mps). Dwyer had behind him the 2012 Olympic 200m bronze medallist Warren Weir in 20.71. Oshane Bailey of Sprintec was third with 20.86.Jamaica’s 2015 World Championship shot put bronze medallist and 2014 Commonwealth Games champion, O’Dayne Richards, won the men’s event with a throw of 20.74m, and secured the qualifying mark for the World Championships in August.Fedrick Dacres was second with 20.04m ahead of Calabar’s Kyle Mitchell, third with 17.56m for his personal best with the senior’s 16-pound shot put.Meanwhile, the ever-improving Shericka Jackson of MVP lowered her 100m best of 11.32 to 11.24 (0.4 mps) in winning the women’s 100m.Shimayra Williams of UTech was second in 11.46, with Audra Segree of Sprintec third with 11.68.Jackson, the 2016 Olympic 400m bronze medallist with a time of 49.83, was tipped by her coach Stephen Francis to be on course to run 47 seconds this year. She certainly looked good this season, adjusting her 200m best to 22.57 in April.The promising Shashalee Forbes of G C Foster took the women’s 200m in 23.07 ahead of Verone Chambers of Sprintec in 23.32. World Championship 2015 100m finalist, Natasha Morrison of Sprintec was third in 23.55.The improving Chad walker of UTech won the men’s 100m in a wind-aided 10.15 seconds (2.3 mps) ahead of Tyquendo Tracey with 10.16 (NWI). Kevean Smith of MVP was third in 10.17 (NWI).
