Police to participate in ‘Read Across Jamaica Day’
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Constabulary Force says that they are in full support of ‘Read Across Jamaica Day’ to be observed in schools island wide tomorrow.
To show solidarity for the thrust, the JCF said that members from several geographic divisions as well as the Commissioner’s Office, the Community Safety and Security Branch (CSSB), the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), The Area 4 Chaplaincy Branch, the Inspectorate of Constabulary (IOC) and the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), will read to students in scores of early childhood and primary level schools across the island.JCF Director of Corporate Communications Nathalie Taylor, in underscoring the importance of the day, noted that as the nation’s law enforcement body, they recognise the need to fully engage children in positive activities from a young age in order to stimulate their development.“So police officers will use this opportunity to read to students a special JCF-created story among other selections of their choosing,” Taylor stated. The story entitled Big Ivy’s Turn Around, which was scripted by Constable Kayla Keane of the CCU, and focuses on promoting kindness and respect, will be read to children. The initiative – which is being led by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information – seeks to help advance literacy and the love of reading in children. This year’s observation is being held under the theme: “Literacy Matters – Read aloud, promote collaboration and confidence in children.”The initiative which is being led by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information – seeks to help advance literacy and the love of reading in children.
