KINGSTON, Jamaica — Classes at the Westwood High School for Girls in Stewart Town were suspended indefinitely on Wednesday after a fire Tuesday night, which razed a section of the prominent boarding school.
The flames, which were confined to the kitchen and dining areas, destroyed furniture and heavy-duty appliances.Boarders from the upper school at Westwood High, one of the country’s top-performing traditional high school, which presently boast a student population of 776 who were slated to sit external examinations starting on Monday, have been asked to return on Sunday as a result of the fire.Meanwhile, Justice Minister Delroy Chuck announced this week that the Legal Reform Department of Government is reviewing more than 600 pieces of legislation to update fines to reflect current monetary values.The issue of outdated fines was thrown into public debate recently when Tesha Miller, alleged leader of the Klansman Gang, was sentenced to $100 for making a false declaration to an immigration official.In other new, Starbucks Coffee Company has announced that it has entered a licensing agreement giving Caribbean Coffee Traders Limited the exclusive rights to own and operate Starbucks stores in Jamaica.Watch as OBSERVER ONLINE wraps the week for you.
