Arsonists targeting disposal sites, concern NSWMA
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Executive Director of The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) Audley Gordon says he is very concerned about fires at the Authority’s Myersville disposal site.
A release from NSWMA late last night said that workers noticed smoke coming from the disposal site on Friday afternoon. Upon investigation fire was observed at more than 11 different spots.
According to Gordon, the fires were extinguished and normal operations restored quickly, thanks to the work of the St Elizabeth Fire Department.
The release said, however, that initial findings strongly suggest the fires were the work of arsonists.
A senior management meeting is reportedly being held this morning to focus on the security of the country’s disposal sites.
“We will give special attention to security arrangements as we look at how going forward we can detect and prevent events such as these. We are cognizant of the threat to the environment by fires and we are taking the necessary steps to safeguard against a recurrence of this environmental threat,” Gordon said.
