Meadowbrook takes maths competition
Meadowbrook High School beat a field of over 40 high and junior high schools across the island to win this year’s Grade Nine Mathematics Problem-solving competition.
Ardenne High and Jamaica College placed second and third respectively.
The competition, staged annually by the School of Education in the Faculty of Humanities and Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona, happened on April 6. It involved students from each school working in groups of four to work on real-life problems that require mathematical thinking in order to solve them. The UWI said it is designed to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative working skills among students.
Director of the School of Education Professor Stafford Griffith said that the competition is one expression of the mandate of the school to promote these skills at an early age and to show the relationship between mathematics and life skills.
The competition was first staged in 2002. As part of their prize package, the top schools received CSEC textbooks courtesy of Kingston Bookshop.
