Kingston Craft Market reopens for business tomorrow
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Kingston Craft Market is to be fully reopened for business at 9:00am tomorrow, after a major clean-up operation was undertaken by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) due to an early morning fire that destroyed 18 shops in the complex.
The UDC said the Jamaica Fire Brigade has completed their inspection of the approximately 2000 square feet of damaged space, which is located on the eastern section of the market, noting that sanitation work will continue today on the affected area that has already been hoarded off.The corporation sought to assure that no one was injured in the incident and no damage was done to the remaining 107 shops.The UDC’s technical team is now preparing an estimate of the damage caused by the fire and the public will be notified as soon as possible.It said support is welcomed from the public and private sector as clean-up and restoration efforts continue.The Kingston Craft Market building is fully insured and has benefited under the redevelopment plans for downtown Kingston from rehabilitative works including the removal and replacement of the existing roof, refurbishing of bathrooms, painting, landscaping and the upgrading of a rainwater disposal system.The facility is opened from Monday to Saturday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Wednesdays at 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.The redevelopment of downtown Kingston and Port Royal is aligned with Vision 2030 Jamaica national development plan.
