Experienced triathlete braces for Malta-sponsored Jakes Off-Road event
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Six-time Jake’s Off-Road Triathlon participant Ina Daley is ready to take on the multi-disciplinary race once again when the 22nd staging of the event takes place on Saturday in St Elizabeth.
Daley, who is a registered physiotherapist and the founder of the triathlon training club, Athlete’s EDGE Multi-Sport, has made the podium at the triathlon every year since 2011.
However, this year her focus has been shifted to helping others in their preparation phase for the charitable event, which features a 300m swim, a 25K mountain bike race and a 7K off-road trail run.“Jakes is an intense race, and requires disciplined training. This is not something that you decide to do at the last minute because the more fit you are, the better your chances are of completing the race,” said Daley, whose training group currently host eight registered participants for the race.“We start with base training for endurance then move on to developing the technical skills. We scouted many areas in St Andrew and St Catherine to find suitable terrain that simulated the Jakes course and we also had a trip to Treasure Beach to let participants see and train on the actual course,” added Daley in reference to their training routine which commences several months before the event to build endurance.Obviously, when partaking in any sporting event, a proper nutrition should be a key component and Daley also offered advice to participants in that department.“Muscles need to be supplied with oxygen in order to perform and as we sweat during the race, we need to rebalance the lost minerals, which are essential for proper muscle contraction and relaxation.“What we eat and drink should provide us with these nutrients, so having a Malta, a sports drink or just plain water can hydrate and refuel the body after a long race such as Jakes,” she noted.
