#SectoralDebate: Firearm holders will lose permit over misuse of guns, warns Montague
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Security Minister, Robert Montague, is warning licensed firearm holders not to brandish their weapons in public, especially in entertainment zones.
Montague, who was making his Sectoral Debate presentation in Parliament this afternoon, said if a person is charged with misusing their firearm, regardless of their identity and affiliation, the weapon will be revoked.“Let me be very clear, if you pull your weapon, or discharge it in a public space illegally it will not only be removed, and revoked, but you can take this commitment to the bank, it will not be returned. So pull it at your own peril, and pray to God you don’t shoot or assault any innocent persons.
No matter who you are, who you are related to, or where you work, it will be gone,” said the minister. His warning follows Sunday’s incident where 29-year-old businessman Zachary Reid was seen on video brandishing a firearm and pointing it at motorists and other people along West King’s House Road in St Andrew. He was arrested and initially charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and assaulting the police. However, following an interview in the presence of his attorney Tom Tavares-Finson, additional charges of failure to hand over firearm for inspection, assault at common law, and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition were laid.He is scheduled to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday, May 2.Moya Hinds
