RIU Reggae hotel reopens following explosion
ST JAMES, Jamaica – The RIU Reggae hotel in Ironshore, St James, which was closed last week Thursday after an explosion at the property left one worker dead and four others injured, has been reopened.
President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) Omar Robinson told OBSERVER ONLINE a short while ago that the hotel was reopened over the weekend following repairs and inspection by the St James Municipal Corporation and the Jamaica Fire Brigade.”They have been up and running since Sunday. Subsequent checks and investigations have been done by the parish council (municipal corporation) and the fire department,” Robinson said. OBSERVER ONLINE was unable to reach the hotel’s management.Reports are that at about 3:30 pm on Thursday, there was an explosion of a boiler pump in a chiller room on the hotel’s property which left 27-year-old maintenance manager, Sederhori McIntosh and four other colleagues injured.McIntosh reportedly died at hospital, while the others were admitted.
