University Singers on show
A varied programme featuring audience favourites is in store for patrons attending This Joyous Eastertide — a concert of sacred music for the season — which is set for the University Chapel, Mona campus in St Andrew, this evening.
Showtime is set for a 4:30 pm start.
Staged by the University Singers for the past seven years, the concert aims to fill the Easter music void said to be lacking from the local entertainment landscape during the season.
Director of the University Singers, Franklin Halliburton notes that the occasion — which has proven to be very popular over the years — is used to tune the choir for its annual concert season, which comes up in June.
“Sunday’s event will feature a mix of choral pieces, solos, duets and other combinations to build the sound of the choir. We have a young chorus and this is a great way to build the blend of voices. During our annual concert season, the focus is not really on individual voices, as, with this depth of talent, there is no way we could accommodate solos for everybody. So this Easter concert offers an opportunity to have our members do solo work,” said Halliburton.
Halliburton notes that the choir and soloists are currently just fine-tuning the pieces in order to execute a flawless production and, as is customary, there will be some standout moments at Sunday’s show.
“At the very first Easter concert seven years ago, soprano Carolyn Reid Cameron delivered Gounod’s O Divine Redeemer; we are bringing that back this year. Also among the soloists will be Kimone Johnson with Noel Dexter’s arrangement ofMe Alone and newcomer Renice Barrett with Ride On King Jesus. This year it is all internal talent, there will be no guest soloist as we have done in past shows,” he added.
