Wadadah fireworks Former champions surprise to reach Western Confed semi-finals

Former champions Wadadah FC secured a berth in the semi-finals of the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation Charley’s JB Rum Super League as the regular season ended with fireworks on Tuesday.

Wadadah FC’s entry in the top four had earlier seemed unlikely as they had been in the lower half of the points standing for most of the first half of the season.

However, they ended the regular season like a runaway train, scoring their seventh-consecutive victory, a 2-1 win over outgoing champions Granville United at WesPow Park, to finish on 29 points, tied with Faulkland FC.

Sandals South Coast topped the table with 41 points, 11 more than second-placed Montego Bay Boys Club, who joined Faulkland as first-time semi-finalists.

In the first leg of the semi-finals at the Frome Sports Club on April 22, Montego Bay Boys Club and Faulkland FC will meet in an all St James battle, while Sandals South Coast and Wadadah FC play in the other game.

Meanwhile, mid-season champions Reggae Youths were the big losers as, after coming into the final round of games in second place, they were shocked 3-2 by relegated Petersfield United in Westmoreland and finished fifth and out of the play-offs.

The stage had been set for an explosive final day of the regular season, which saw Wadadah FC being rewarded for an impressive second half of the competition. Leonardo Fogarthy scored in the 30th minute and Sebastian Robinson in the 50th minute to give them the lead before Rodney Hinds pulled one back for Granville United in the 72nd minute.

With Petersfield FC determined to go out with a bang, led by two goals from Romario Whyte, they took the fight to Reggae Youths and led 3-1 at half-time. Whyte scored in the 11th minute and in the 27th, his second goal coming seconds after Dino White had given the home team a 2-0 lead. O’Carey Spence had scored his 10th goal of the season in the 15th minute to tie up the scores at that time.

An own goal in the 47th minute cut the deficit to one, but Petersfield FC held on to score only their fourth win of the campaign.

Boys Club’s qualification was anti-climactic after Clark’s Town failed to show at the UDC field and were relegated.

At Jarrett Park, Faulkland FC extended their record of making it to the semi-finals of every league competition in their four-year history. They beat Beaches Negril 4-1 thanks to two goals from Peter-Lee Vassell and one each from Neil Clarke, who scored his league-leading 11th goal, and Jalani Nicholas in time added.

Darren Dixon had given Beaches Negril some hope when he scored an equaliser in the 32nd minute.

Sandals South Coast, who will be favourites for the title, wrapped up their regular season with a 2-1 win over Hopewell United as Ron Daley scored twice, while an own goal had Hopewell United tie up the scores in the 30th minute.
