Jomo’s mission
New act Jomo is a man on a mission.
Armed with what he calls heart, talent and determination, Jomo is committed to bring a level of creativity and professionalism to the local music industry.
“I am a believer in creating a sound that has international appeal… that international sound. I am not a Vybz Kartel, who can have one million songs out there, but my aim is to have one good song that can be remembered for decades. I look at man like Shaggy and Junior Gong, who don’t have di bag a song out there, but the tunes they have stay relevant for a very long time.”
Jomo has just released two tracks, Gallis, on the Feel Good rhythm, which he describes as a feel-good song about having a great time and partying, and a dance track, called Instructions, aimed at highlighting some of the currently dance moves popular on the party scene. The music video for Jomo’s Gallis track is currently in production.
The Calabar High School old boy is confident these have the potential to make put his name out there. His confidence comes from the fact that he surrounds himself with great people who are knowledgeable about production.
“When I look at the successful people out there, one of the things I see is how they work with a great team — teamwork makes the dream work. I believe you have to let the right people in; everybody can bring their strengths to the final product. A lot of artiste out there not into spending the time for proper production — dem not spending the time in choosing the right rhythm, writing good material, and definitely not spending the time in the recording process to ensure that it is the best material that reaches out there. We, as artiste, must realise that we have to produce music that is bigger than Weddy Weddy and can pass airport.”
Jomo says his does music strictly for the love of it, but his day job sees him manning the ship of a growing empire. He operates a service station in the Corporate Area and owns the sound system Wappins International. He is also promoter of the weekly talent show Bikers Paradise — Making the Stars.
“This show is intended to expose the talents of the young people in Jamaica. We start on April 2 in Nancy Pen and we hope it will give some of the youths a chance. I am not here to be a saviour, but a lot of them didn’t get a chance and I just want to give them that, as some are on the verge. And because they have no links and no money, nobody is taking notice of them,” Jomo stated.
