St James Municipal Corporation mourns footballer ‘Kid Harris’
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The St James Municipal Corporation (formerly Parish Council) is mourning the death of employee Devon Dunkley, who was gunned down in the William Street Market in downtown Montego Bay on Thursday night.
According to a release from the corporation, the 55-year- old Dunkley, popularly known as ‘Kid Harris’, worked as a municipal attendant and had been in the employ of the local authority since January 23, 2013.
At the time of his death, he was posted at the Old Hospital Park on Gloucester Avenue.
“I knew ‘Kid Harris’ from his days playing with Seba United Football Club and his name is synonymous with football in the parish,” said Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the Municipal Corporation, Councillor Homer Davis.
“He grew up in the William Street area, where we know as North Gully, the same place where Seba was based. For a man who has done so much for his community, it is reprehensible, to say the least, that his life was taken like that.”
Dunkley was also a former national goalkeeper.
Davis also pledged his continued support to the police and was ready to assist the investigations.
The corporation said it will also be coordinating counselling sessions with the Peace Management Initiative (PMI) for affected members of staff.
