St Elizabeth businessman arrested for failure to file tax returns
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A St Elizabeth businessman was arrested last week Friday by the Major Organised Crime Agency (MOCA) for his failure to file tax returns for the years 2012-2015.
Arrested and charged is Oswald Powell, proprietor of Oswald’s Seafood Restaurant.
A news release from the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) disclosed that Powell, who operates in the Alligator Pond community, was arrested after the court issued a warrant of disobedience for his arrest due to his failure to attend court in relation to his tax returns for the years 2012-2015.
He was offered bail in sum of $30,000 and is to return to the Mandeville Parish Court on February 20, 2017.
The TAJ said that Powell’s arrest forms part of the sustained efforts by TAJ along with MOCA and the Intelligence, Investigation and Enforcement Unit (IIEU) to actively pursue delinquent taxpayers by utilizing the various tax collection tools provided under the law.
