VOX POP: Jamaicans weigh in on Olympic gold medal strip
With Jamaica’s 4×100-metre men’s relay team losing their 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal after Nesta Carter’s Beijing urine and blood samples were retested and found positive for the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine, Jamaica Observer reporter Racquel Porter asked Jamaicans: “How do you feel about the Jamaican men losing their 2008 Olympic gold medal?”
“I think it is unfortunate. Truth be told, I wish it hadn’t happened. The greater concern is whether it is an attempt at Usain Bolt’s record. For me, personally, I am deeply saddened by it. A part of me want to believe that it is not true although they claimed to have evidence that will cause them to come to that conclusion. I hope this does not play into Usain’s ego and force him to change his retirement plan. Let us move on and respect their decision.”— Georgia Dixon-Smith“It is unfortunate but if it was any other country the same rules would have applied.”— Andre Godfrey“The sample that he submitted wasn’t prohibited. Based on that we should appeal the case and get reinstatement because it a affect the legacy of one of our greatest athletes.”— Errol Brown“Rules are rules. If they are to be punished, it is sad that it happened to our countrymen. It is sad that Usain ago lose his medal. My question is, if the substance was not on the banned list that is a cause for concern. In that case, they should not be stripped.”— Douglas Gladston “It wasn’t on the banned substance list so I recommend they appeal and get back their medal. Basically, Carter is right because it wasn’t on the list of banned substance. It should not be a case where he or the entire team lose their medal.”— Rosemarie Baxter“I feel bad about them losing their medal. They will try anything to make them lose the medal. I am really saddened by it, but we are a fighting nation, we will win again.”— Kenroy Briscoe“I am very upset. I feel like them thief Jamaica out a something. Look how long it gone and them just a bring it up.”— Wayne Wisdom“It is just upsetting. I don’t think it is really true. I think they stealing from us.”— Arthur Lindsay(Photos: Lionel Rookwood)
