UWI Research Days guide students in the right direction
In addition to an impressive slate of research events and business solutions for investors and other stakeholders, the UWI Mona Research Days 2017 staging will bring a world of innovations and excitement for students and teachers who attend the upcoming staging on the Mona Campus Wednesday February 1 – Friday February 3.
High school students and teachers will be able to participate in a variety of student-oriented events, with several opportunities to win prizes and gain hands-on experience in experiments and activities which would not otherwise be accessible to them. There is also the direct effort to familiarize them with the world of tertiary education in general and the UWI Mona Campus in particular.
Students will be able to create maps and simulate how to reduce disaster risks and address public health crises through a mapathon organised by the Department of Geography and Geology. An assessment centre set up by the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will offer a variety of psychological tests to help students identify personality traits which will help with career decisions.
The skies above the Mona Campus will be alive with daily Delivery Drone demos through a collaboration of the Computing Society, Alternative Energy Club and the Department of Computing. Students will be able to learn a little Chinese, Japanese and French in Micro Teaching sessions, get Salsa dancing instructions and sweeten their day with a Piñata session, all three staged by the Modern Languages and Literatures Department.
In addition to tours of different Faculties and Departments, there will also be the chance to view hi-tech equipment up close in special demonstrations such as one from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Fertility Unit.
These activities are designed to provide soon-to-be high school graduates with the opportunity of hands-on experience in fields that interest them; and a better understanding of each faculty while also attending research-based workshops and seminars.
Over the three days, researchers will also address major development issues that affect Jamaica and the Caribbean by engaging the students and other visitors through interactive displays, demonstrations and key innovations. This mega-display will be showcased inside the campus’ Research Village, and the public is invited to see how research is improving products and mechanisms in a range of fields and industries such as science, technology and crime solving.
UWI Research Days 2017 takes place on the Mona Campus from February 1 – 3, 2017.
