TARCKING THE THREE-YEAR-OLDS: A sharp return
Fearless Samurai (Fearless Vision – Sayuri), in preparation for the upcoming three-year-old Classic races, produced a performance worthy of consideration to win a Restricted Allowance event at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
Coming off a three-month break, Fearless Samurai, trained by Wayne DaCosta and ridden by Omar Walker, easily defeated his four opponents in the 1,500-metre event, winning by 11 lengths in a decent time of 1:32.1.
“It was a good performance by
Fearless Samurai. I mean, he was by far the better horse in the race and he showed exactly that. He picked up a virus in the latter part of last season and we just sidelined him until this year for his re-entry.
“Let’s hope he can go on from here, but he is definitely a talented colt and whether he will be able to go further than a mile is left to be seen, but he is definitely talented.
“He is also a temperamental sort, so if he settles down and concentrates in his races you can never tell; he is a class horse and he has already beaten
Sotomayor by five lengths in the other race which he won,” DaCosta said.
From a level break,
Great Faith (Dane Dawkins) shot into an early lead overFearless Samurai, under a tight hold from Walker, as Lady Faye (Andree Powell) andEl Maestro (Richard Mitchell) tracked rivals from third and fourth places, respectively.
Fearless Samurai then drew alongside and pointed onGreat Faith approaching the final bend, still under a tight hold, and from that point everyone knew who the winner was going to be.
Using hands and knees coming into the stretch drive, Walker then asked his mount to go and, without hesitation,
Fearless Samurai answered and powered home to win effortlessly at the end.
Lady Faye finished second ahead ofEl Maestro in third andGreat Faith in fourth.
When asked what’s next for the chestnut colt, DaCosta said: “Not sure; we were just planning on getting through this race first and then concentrating on what’s coming up next. More than likely it is going to be in a Restricted Stakes event in the latter part of next month.”
