Middlesbrough FC saddened at passing of Lindy Delapenha
MIDDLESBROUGH, England – Middlesbrough Football Club in a post on its official website today (Friday January 27) says it is saddened to hear of the passing on Thursday of one of its finest players, Jamaican Lloyd Lindberg ‘Lindy’ Delapenha.
The Middlesbrough post is published below.
Lloyd Lindberg ‘Lindy’ Delapenha was born on the same day Charles Lindberg successfully flew solo across the Atlantic, May 20 1927, hence his unusual middle name.
Famed for his rocket-like shot, he was the first black player to represent Boro.
The Jamaican forward was a loyal club servant for almost a decade, during which time he earned a place in the hearts of all Boro fans who saw him play.
With speed, physical presence and a fierce shot – said to be one of the most powerful in the game – he was a key player in an era which spanned three managers, David Jack, Walter Rowley and Bob Dennison.
He made 270 Boro appearances, scoring 93 goals. His career in England also saw him represent Portsmouth, Mansfield Town, Hereford United and Burton Albion.
