JC retain crown
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Jamaica College are still the ISSA/FLOW Olivier Shield champions after turning back a gallant Cornwall College 4-3 on penalty kicks after they played out a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time in the final at the Montego Bay Sports Complex last night.
Tyreek Magee gave Jamaica College the lead from a free kick in the 43rd minute, while Jourdaine Fletcher, with his 36th goal of the season, restored parity in the 56th minute. Both goals came against the run of play.
Jamaica College’s goalkeeper Kojay Johnson had an outstanding game, making a number of timely saves in the second half when Cornwall College threatened to take over the game, then saved one of the penalty kicks in the shoot-out to give his team the advantage.
The Manning Cup champions’ win extended their run of wins to four straight and 23 overall and also the dominance of Corporate Area teams in the competition to 10 years in the process.
Andrew Peart, the Jamaica College assistant coach, said his boys were deserving winners.
“This was a very tough game against a Cornwall College team that scored a lot of goals and gave up a few. We knew the danger they posed, as they have a very good offensive team, but we also knew our strengths,” he said.
Dr Dean Weatherly, the Cornwall College coach, agreed that it was an “exciting game; one befitting the final game of the season”, but bemoaned the missed chances.
“We had the game to win; we should have won this game in regulation time, but we just did not make use of the chances we created,” he said.
After Johnson made two good saves in the first half — against Fletcher in the 26th minute and Aiden Jokomba in the 28th minute — Jamaica College took the lead when Magee curled a free kick from the edge of the area into the right corner of the goal.
Cornwall College hit back 10 minutes into the second half, when Fletcher finished off a move that started in his own half by powering the ball past Johnson to pull his team level.
In penalty kicks, Oquin Robinson, Magee, Ajeanie Talbott, and Chevany Willis all scored for Jamaica College, while Peter-Lee Vassell, Fletcher and Michael Heaven scored for Cornwall. Dwayne Harding’s shot was saved and Howard Dent then hit his shot off the cross bar.
