Johnson, Pagon lead seeded players in 3rd round of JN Open tennis
TOP men’s seeds Damion Johnson and Dwayne Pagon will lead in today’s third-round singles action at the 2016 Jamaica National (JN) Open Tennis Championships being played at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston, beginning at 5:00 pm.
The majority of the seeds in the men’s singles easily won their second-round matches comfortably last evening. However, this evening’s games in the round of 16 are expected to be much tougher as they look to book their places in the quarter-finals.
Top seed Johnson will face unseeded Samuel Wilson in today’s third-round action at 6:30 pm. On Monday night, Johnson easily disposed of unseeded Anthony Burges in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Meanwhile, second seed Dwayne Pagon also won his second-round match by brushing aside unseeded Alex Gordon in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Pagon will take on unseeded Peter Berry at 7:30 pm.
Other men’s seeds in today’s third round are seventh seed Oric Angus, who plays Alan McNab; sixth seed Yussuf Migoko taking on unseeded Roshane Henry; 11th seed Aman Chatani battling with fourth seed Duainne Miller.
Third seed Marcus Malcolm vs Gawayne Cox; fifth seed Jacob Bicknell going up against unseeded Stefan Wilson; eighth seed David Goldsmith meeting 11th seed Daniel Gyles; and Dale Vernon taking on Peter Martin.
Results of Monday night’s games saw Bicknell brushing aside Julius Biggs in straight sets 6-2, 6-2; McNab knocking out Jason Calloo in straight sets 6-2, 6-3; Gawayne Cox breezing past Gregory Spencer 6-1, 6-3; Stefan gaining a walkover against Mocoy Malcolm, as did Peter Berry over Andre Burrell and Samuel Wilson over Horatio Ludford.
In women’s open singles matches scheduled for today, fourth seed Emma Dibbs go up against unseeded Kailey Chin at 5:00 pm; second seed Pauline Hylton take on Malaika Masson at 6:30 pm.
Top seed in the women’s open Micheala Stephens advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-0, 6-1 beating of unseeded Onika Shaw on Monday night; third seed Shea-Ann Kameka brushed aside unseeded Hayley McNair 6-2, 6-1.
In Men’s Class Two singles, defending champion and fifth seed Stephen Shirley defeated Garfield Forbes 6-0, 3-1 (retired); Randolph Barriffe beat Andrea Coy 7-5, 6-4; Garth Darby whipped Warrenton Dixon 6-1, 6-2; and Bruce Hart eliminated Alrick Sproul 6-4, 6-4.
