Top seeds Johnson, Pagon bow into action
TOP seeds Damion Johnson and Dwayne Pagon will begin their quest for top honours as the second round of the 2016 Jamaica National (JN) Open Tennis Championships continues at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston this afternoon, starting at 5:00.
Johnson, seeded at number one and four-time winner of the tournament, will face unseeded Anthony Burgess at 6:30.
Johnson earlier stated he is looking forward to the challenge from all his opponents as he tries to regain the title he lost to Rowland “Randy” Phillips last year.
Meanwhile, his arch-rival Pagon has similar goals and aspirations, which could put both on an explosive collision course. Pagon will open today against unseeded Alex Gordon in his second-round encounter.
Both have met in many finals, but Johnson has bragging rights.
Meanwhile, fifth seed Jacob Bicknell, who recently won the Supreme Ventures Open, will face unseeded Julius Biggs, while 13th seed Macoy Malcolm will go up against unseeded Stefan Wilson.
In other men’s open singles matches today, Gregory Spencer vs Gawayne Cox; Horatio Ludford vs Samuel Wilson; Peter Berry vs Andre Burrell; Kristopher Martin vs Dane Vernon.
The tournament continues this afternoon at 5:00.
