Campbell, McNair are Hi-Lyte Davis Cup Round-Robin Tennis champs
MARIO Campbell of Wolmer’s Boys’ and Haley McNair of Immaculate Conception High emerged singles champions of the 2016 Hi-Lyte Davis Cup Round-Robin Tennis Tournament for 18 and under held at the RTA Academy last Sunday.
The 15-year-old Campbell defeated his older 18-year-old opponent, Daniel Chatani from Campion College, 10-7 to win the singles final. In the semi-finals, Campbell crushed Nicholas Richards 10-2, while Chatani got the better of Romeo Edwards 10-9.
Meanwhile, in the 18 and under girls singles final, 15-year-old McNair defeated 15-year-old Kailey Chin from Immaculate Conception 10-7 to capture the title. McNair had beaten Moesha Fox 10-3, while Chin had defeated D’Agaene Clarke 10-5 in the semi-finals.
The boys’ and girls’ competition was played in two groups with the winners and runners-up contesting the semi-finals. Chatani topped Group ‘A’ by winning his four matches with Richards second with two wins and two loses, while Group ‘B’ was won by Campbell with four wins with Edwards second with three wins, and a defeat.
Group ‘A’ of the girls as won by McNair with three wins with Clarke second with two wins and a loss, 7-10, to McNair. Chin on Group ‘B’ with three wins with Fox finishing second with two wins and a defeat, 8-10, to Chin.
In the 14 and under singles for boys, Dale Hewitt from Campion College defeated Russell Fairman from Ardenne High for the title, while the girls 14 and under singles title was won by Alicia Pairman from Campion College, who gained a walk over from Kathrine Dibbs.
Lia Romero from Hillel Academy, with 35 points, won the 10 and under section from Xyena Miller from Immaculate Conception with 32 points.
Mikale Williams of Hillel accummulated 56 points to capture the eight and under category ahead of Savannah Taylor from Sts Peter and Paul, who finished with 52 points.
Matthew White from Porter Centre captured the six and under category with 30 points from James Rosen of Hillel Academy with 52 points.
Rayne Russell, a director of Russell Tennis Academy, said the tournament was to showcase players from all ages, from 18 and under with prep school players competing in six and under categories for boys and girls.
He said the tournament also featured seven events and was played on a round-robin format with a unique sudden-death tie-breaker game. This format allowed players to play everyone in the draw with the winner decided by overall points.
