Boxing delegation off to Barbados today
A team of seven Jamaican boxers and three officials is scheduled to depart the island today for Barbados to participate in the Caribbean Boxing tournament between December 5-11.
The Jamaica team of boxers will participate in seven different categories. Boxers Daniel Hylton and Ricardo Carter, who recently scored victories over their Cayman opponents at a pro-am preparatory tournament, will participate in the lightweight class of 60kg for juniors and lightweight class elite, respectively, while Keron Thomas will compete in the flyweight class — 51kg for junior novice females.
Thomas is a product of the Jamaica Boxing Board and presently engaged with a network of partners working with Fight For Peace to deliver a programme of sports and personal development in volatile communities. At present, the focus is on Denham Town, Fletcher’s Land, Trench Town, Tivoli Gardens, Parade Gardens, and Hannah Town.
Quite recently Thomas made her debut against another teenaged boxer from Cayman at the pro-am seven-fight card at the Barbican Beach Sports Complex at Barbican on November 5.
Thomas lost narrowly to her Cayman opponent in the preparatory tournament, but is now on her way to representing Jamaica at the upcoming Caribbean Development tournament in Barbados.
Other categories will feature Kesta Davis in the welterweight — 69kg — Elite; Jonathan Hanson — 75kg Elite; Ricardo Carter in the lightweight 60kg — Elite; Ian Darby in the light heavyweight 81kg — Elite, and Ricardo Brown in the super heavyweight 91+kg — Elite.
Kevin Stupart will manage the party, while Robert Napier and Gilbert Vaz will be the coaches on tour.
