STETHS seek six
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will go in search of their sixth ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup schoolboy football title and third in four years when they take on 11-time champions, Cornwall College in the final at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.
STETHS beat Ben Francis Knockout champions Lennon High 2-1 in Saturday’s semi-finals played at Manchester High, to book a spot in their fifth straight final.
STETHS’s win came a day after Cornwall College beat 2014 champions Clarendon College by the same margin at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.
It was the eighth-consecutive game that Lennon High managed just a single goal in regulation time, and they had a five-game win streak snapped.
It will be the first meeting between STETHS and Cornwall in the daCosta Cup for more than 15 years but it will be a repeat of the 2013 ISSA Rural Area Under-16 final, which STETHS won 1-0 in extra time.
On Saturday, Nicholas Gayle scored the winner in the 88th minute to break a 1-1 tie from the first half, in a game that saw bright sunshine at the start and heavy rains at the end.
Tajae Palmer gave STETHS the lead after two minutes, after Lennon’s goalkeeper Tyrone Mullings blocked a shot into his path and he made no mistake.
Ray Campbell pulled Lennon High level in the 43rd minute when he beat STETHS’s goalkeeper, Lenroy Wallace from about 30 yards out.
The second half was played mostly in a steady downpour but as the game seemed set for extra time, Nicholas Gayle popped up to score the winner for STETHS in the 88th minute.
A day earlier, Clarendon College’s season dissolved in chaos as Head Coach Paul “Tegat” Davis was ordered off the touchline and Dominic Lemont shown a red card by Referee Daneon Parchment after the whistle, as the Clarendon team went down to their fourth straight loss.
A month earlier, Clarendon College had blasted Excelsior High 7-1 in a Flow Super Cup second-round game after knocking out Jamaica College, and looked on target to win four titles.
They created few chances against Cornwall College on Friday and were chasing the game for long periods after Giovanni Reid gave the Montego Bay school the lead in the seventh minute.
Creggton Charlton pulled Clarendon level in the 85th minute but a mistake in their defence saw Cornwall restore the lead in the 88th minute through substitute Aiden Jokomba.
The Clarendon College team protested the goal, claiming offside, and as a consequence of their protestations Davis was ejected.
Cornwall College could have killed off the game as a contest in the second half. They pinned Clarendon College back in their own defensive area but Dwayne Harding had his shot blocked from point-blank range while Jourdaine Fletcher flashed a free kick just inches over the bar. The latter also powered a shot into the side netting after eluding three defenders.
