Fabian Campbell runaway pro winner of Alliance Buccaneer golf tournament
Professional golfer Fabian Campbell continued his impressive run at the 21st Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament at Caymanas Golf club on Sunday to take the two-day tournament by a whopping 14 strokes ahead of Lloyd Campbell and 15 strokes more than defending champion Wesley Brown, who tied for third position with Michael Rowe.
Campbell ended day one on an impressive seven under par 65, being the only golfer to shoot an under par score in the tournament. On day two he shot par 36 on the front nine and three over par 39 on the back nine, to end the day on 75 or three over par. His two-day total was 140 or four under par for the tournament.
Campbell was very pleased with winning the tournament for the second time ahead of three-time winner, Wesley Brown. He credited the win to his support team, the Buccanner’s group, Yohan Campbell of Microlabs, the Jamiaca Broilers Group and his brother who helped to motivate him to do well in the tournament.
He said that he knew he had to do well, knowing that the defending champion would be trying his best to retain his championship even though he was not well. He said that he was proud of himself for winning the tournament.
Last year’s pro champion Wesley Brown, though disappointed with losing the tournament, said that he was happy that Campbell won the event that only has two winners (Fabian and himself). He said that he was ‘under the weather’ with the flu and being on the weak side, his game was affected on both days. Brown said that he even toyed with not playing, but that he wanted to support the tournament because of the charities that it will contribute to (the Laws Street Trade Training Centre and the Jamaica Cancer Society). Brown did say that he was looking forward to coming back next year to take back his championship as he loves to win any tournament that he plays in.
The day-two scores for the pros were Fabian Campbell 140 (65 and 75), Lloyd Campbell 154 (76 and 78), Wesley Brown 155 (76 and 78) and Michael Rowe 155 (80 and 75), who both tied for third.
In the men’s section, Tommy Lee and Sean Morris both ended the two days on 155 or 11 over par and had to be separated by a shoot-off. Lee got the better of Morris after shooting four to Morris’s five to take the amateur section. Sean Green, who led the field at the end of day one, shot 159 for the two days to take third spot.
Young female golfer Kei Harris, who was in second position at the end of day one, powered her way ahead of day-one leader Maggie Lyn and Michelle Gabay. Harris’s day two score was 157, while Lyn ended on 159 and Gabay was nine strokes back on 168.
Former West Indies and Jamaica cricketer Jeffrey Dujon continued his day-one lead to narrowly take the Men’s Super Senior category after posting 156 for the two days. Dave Lyn, who was in third on day one, closed the tournament in second place one stroke back on 157, while George Hugh took third place on 158.
The 21st staging of the two-day Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament, which is Alliance’s ninth consecutive year of sponsorship, teed-off on Saturday and Sunday at the Caymanas Golf Club.
The tournament featured two different competitions which ran concurrently. A two-day, 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) qualifier, while the other, which was played on Sunday, was a Stableford competition.
The proceeds will go towards perennial beneficiary, the Laws Street Trade Training Centre where the target is $1 million. The Laws Street Trade Training Centre will use funds to provide for the needy in the inner city as well as provide skills training. A new charity — the Jamaica Cancer Society — was added this year in memory of Mark Chin, who died of cancer earlier in the year.
The Jamaica Cancer Society will use their funds for public education and screening for the public, including persons in the Laws Street area.
This year’s competition was being played in the memory of six of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives, namely Milton “Buddy” Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford, Al Chong and Mark Chin.
The awards presentation ceremony was scheduled for yesterday at Constant Spring Golf Club in Kingston.
