Rainy day of Alliance Buccaneer Golf Tournament
The 21st staging of the two-day Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament, which is Alliance’s ninth consecutive year of sponsorship, teed off yesterday at the Caymanas Golf Club. The pros started the course at 10:00 am while the juniors teed off at 1:00 pm.
There was a short interruption of play as a result of rain and about 20 golfers stayed away but there was still over 100 golfers on the course during the day.
Professional golfer Fabian Campbell closed a very good day on 65 or seven under par ahead of Lloyd Campbell, four over par 76 and the defending champion Wesley Brown one stroke back on 77 or five over par. Fabian recorded 31 or five under par in the front nine to Lloyd’s 38 on both front and back, while Brown recorded 38 and 39 on the front and back, respectively. Fabian Campbell will look to continue his good run today while Lloyd Campbell and Wesley Brown look forward to posting better scores, especially with better weather conditions throughout the day.
Sean Green currently leads the men’s section after closing on par 72, just one stroke ahead of national junior golfer Justin Burrowes on 73, with Paul Leyow three strokes back on 76 in third place.
The small group of six ladies is led by Maggie Lyn on 76. She is followed by young female golfer and national representative Kei Harris on 79, and defending champion Jodi Munn-Barrow, who shot 80 on day one of the tournament.
Former West Indies and Jamaica cricketer Jeffrey Dujon is the runaway leader in the Men’s Super Senior category with a end of play score of 77 or five over par and is five strokes ahead of Mike Boyd on 82 in second place, and Dave Lyn and Bruce Lyn, who are both on 83 in third position.
The golfers will tee off as early as 6:30 am today in order to allow for the big field to complete the course before nightfall.
Some of the other golfers who will be on the course include former Jamaica Golf Association presidents Wayne Chia Chong and Gordon Hutchinson, as well as current president Peter Chin and the defending champion of the amateur section William Knibbs.
The tournament features two different competitions running concurrently. One will be a two-day 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) qualifier, while the other to be played today will be a Stableford competition.
The format of play features: Yesterday and today – Medal Play HCP 1-12, Stableford 13-24, Professional, Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies and Juniors, while today it will be Stableford full handicap 10-12, 13-24, 25-36, Men and Ladies. The Juniors will compete for the Vitoria Marley Trophy, Marley died in an accident on a golf course.
The proceeds will go towards perennial beneficiary for the Laws Street Trade Training Centre where the target is $1 million. The Laws Street Trade Training Centre will use funds to provide for the needy in the inner-city as well as provide skills training. A new charity, the Jamaica Cancer Society, has been added this year in memory of Mark Chin, who died of cancer earlier in the year. The Jamaica Cancer Society will use their funds for public education and screening for the public, including persons in the Laws Street area.
According to Peter Chin, who wears many hats, namely president of title sponsor Alliance Investment Management, president of the Buccaneers and the president of the Jamaica Golf Association, the company was very pleased to be supporting two important charities through the tournament, as well as the fact that it was beneficial to the sport in terms of providing quality competition to all the categories of golfers in the island.
This year’s competition is being played in memory of six of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives, namely Milton ‘Buddy’ Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford, Al Chong and Mark Chin.

The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at Constant Spring Golf Club in Kingston beginning at 7:00 pm.
