Hillel Academy cops Hi-Lyte tennis team title
HILLEL Academy trounced Campion College 4-0 to capture the boys 18 and under title in the inaugural staging of the Hi-Lyte Sports Drink/Access Financial Services Russell Tennis Academy (RTA) Team Championship between both schools at the RTA Academy last Sunday.
The boys 16 and under singles finals saw Shane Earle of Campion beating Aiden Murray, also from Campion 6-4, to win the singles title.
Cole McNair took the championships singles title for boys 14 and under from Keyondre Clarke as he defaulted his match due to a shoulder injury. Hillel’s Blake Shoucair won the boys 14 and under consolation final with a fighting sudden-death 3-2 victory over Matthew Cameron of Campion.
The girls 14 and under singles final was won by Alicia Pearman of Campion who defeated Cai Drummond of Campion 6-2, while the consolation singles final was won by Courtney Spencer of Campion who defeated Iyanna McKenzie of Campion 6-2.
Meanwhile, 60 top high school tennis players for boys and girls from both Hillel and Campion faced off in a challenge for the team titles in the singles, while the girls played singles and doubles in different age-group categories.
RTA Director, Rayne Russell, said he was very pleased with the turnout of players.
“We had an exciting weekend of tennis and the kids came out to play the best tennis for their respective schools,” Russell said.
“This is also the first in a series of inter-schools challenge tennis matches, as we are preparing our players for the upcoming 2017 tournament series, and also to select talent for our newly developed tennis scholarship programme,” he added.
Russell said the scholarship programme will award top performing players on a per term basis by allowing them free lessons, product and equipment sponsorship.
Russell thanked Virginia Dare through Hi-Lyte Sports Drink and Access Financial Services Limited for their kind support.
